Here are the lectures I’m most excited about in next week’s lineup at SVA – two talks by artists, and one on an emerging gallery scene in Lower Manhattan:
Tuesday, December 4th, 7:00 p.m.
STEPHEN JOHNSON on DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The MPS Digital Photography Department presents a lecture by renowned landscape photographer Stephen Johnson, a pioneer who has helped shape the technology for today’s (and tomorrow’s) digital photographers. Based on his latest book, Johnson will discuss the history of electronic imaging, the transformation of the darkroom, ethics in the digital age, and trends in digital photography for the future.

A lecture by photographer and SVA alumnus Jonathan Torgovnik (BFA 1996 Photography), whose work has been published in Aperture, GEO, Newsweek, Paris Match, The Sunday Times Magazine, Stern and Smithsonian. Torgovnik was recently awarded the 2007 UK National Portrait Gallery’s Portrait Prize and the Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography. His work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Europe and recognized by Pictures Of The Year International, American Photography, Communication Arts, Graphis and Photo District News.

Artists Talk on Art presents: East of the Bowery: Trends from the Galleries
Traditionally associated with recent immigrants to the city, New York’s Lower East Side is also home to a diverse cross-section of galleries. In this panel discussion, representatives from several of the neighborhood’s art venues talk about its newfound vitality: Steven Canon, Tribe Gallery; Jane Kim, Trust Projects; and Kazuko Miyamoto, gallery onetwentyeight. Moderated by Suzan Fleminger, Abrons Art Center and organized by Fran Kornfeld and Ann Lydecker.
