“Industry insiders Darius D. Himes and Mary Virginia Swanson demystify the process of producing and publishing a book of photographs. They will survey the current landscape of photography book publishing and point out the many avenues to pursue and pitfalls to avoid. Himes and Swanson will provide an overview of the publishing industry; an intimate look at the process of making a book; a close review of how to market a photo book; a section on case studies, built around discussions and interviews with published photographers; and a final section presenting a wealth of resources and information to aid in the understanding of the publishing world.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Darius D. Himes was a founding editor of photo-eye Booklist and is a cofounder of Radius Books, a nonprofit company publishing books on the visual arts.  Himes is also a lecturer, consultant and writer who has contributed to numerous publications.

Mary Virginia Swanson is a consultant in the area of licensing and marketing fine-art photography. Swanson frequently lectures and conducts workshops and educational programs for photographers and students. Respected judge of competitions and awards as well as portfolio reviewer, she is widely recognized for her blog Marketing Photos, a valued resource for photographers.

One of my favorite fairs of the year, without question!  From the website:

Printed Matter presents the fifth annual NY Art Book Fair, November 5–7 at MoMA PS1, Long Island City, Queens.

Free and open to the public, the Fair hosts over 200 international presses, booksellers, antiquarian dealers, artists and publishers from twenty countries, offering the best in contemporary art book publishing.

Philip Aarons, Chairman of the Board of Printed Matter, said: “The NY Art Book Fair is the premiere venue to find what’s new in art publishing. While it has spawned the next generation of independent art book fairs world-wide, it remains the biggest, the best, and by far the most fun.”

The NY Art Book Fair includes special project rooms, screenings, book signings, and performances, throughout the weekend.

Other events include the third annual Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference, and The Classroom, a curated series of informal conversations between artists, together with readings, workshops and other artist-led events.”

“The print-on-demand revolution has opened up new publishing possibilities for photographers; it has never been easier or more affordable to produce and market a book of your photographs. The traditional publishing path has the advantage of a highly specialized team that brings experience with design, production, marketing and distribution systems to the table. In a self-publishing scenario you can create exactly the book you envision, but without the input and expertise of seasoned professionals at a publishing house. Which scenario is best for you?In this presentation, coauthors Darius Himes and Mary Virginia Swanson will discuss both avenues to publishing and help participants determine the pros/cons of each. November 7th Fotoweek DC Portfolio Reviews: Registration open!

Within the FOTOWEEK DC FESTIVAL there is a one-day portfolio review event that has a fine roster of Reviewers, offers a discounted rate for students, and will work closely with you to confirm to top picks within days of registering.  If interested, don’t hesitate as this will sell out!

Come early/stay late as the programing this year is super – many exhibitions, lectures, a one-day workshop with Brian Storm of Media Storm, displays of contemporary photobooks by publisher, as well as the amazing Indie Photobook Library, and more.  My co-author Darius Himes and I are proud to be a part of the programming, speaking at the Corcoran on the day after the reviews, Monday, November 8th at noon at the Corcoran: “To Be Published or Self-Publish?”

Registration open now for Contemporary Artist Book Conference, November 5th and 6th in NY

In conjunction with the NY Art Book Fair, the annual CONTEMPORARY ARTIST BOOK CONFERENCE will be held at the same location:

MoMA’s P.S.1 in Queens, NY.   I love this artists book fair (which is FREE!), and this conference (reasonably priced).  Not to be missed!

From the event webpage:

“In conjunction with the NY Art Book Fair, Printed Matter announces a conference on contemporary artists’ books. The program will include speakers, panels, artists’ presentations, and receptions. The conference focuses on recent developments in artists’ books. Sessions this year focus on zines, typography, pedagogy, and criticism. These and other themes are intended to encourage dialog amongst scholars, collectors, artists, and librarians.

The Conference will be held on the first floor of MoMA PS1.

You can purchase a ticket for the full conference (with Emily Roysdon edition) here or for single sessions here.

Six panel sessions will be held, along with an hour-long “pecha kucha,” or lightning round, in which invited guests will present for five minutes each, discussing one or more artists’ books, zines, multiples, etc.
