“Known mostly for her documentary work of New York City in the 1930s, Berenice Abbott was also a portrait photographer, an educator, an inventor, and a writer. She believed that all photographers should have personal projects that they are passionate about, no matter what the subject matter.

The Julia Dean Photo Workshops is pleased to announce The 2010 Berenice Abbott Prize for an Emerging Photographer, an international competition. One person is selected for this prize and is given a one-person, all expenses paid, exhibition at an LA gallery (location and date TBA), an exhibition book, a Canon EOS 50D/ EF 28-135 Kit, plus a spread of the winning work in Rangefinder magazine. The winner will also receive a photograph of Berenice Abbott taken by Hank O’Neal.
Juried by David Fahey of Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles.
Berenice Abbott was a photographer of great accomplishment. She began her career as an assistant to Man Ray and became known mostly for her documentary work of New York City in the 1930s. Berenice was also a portrait photographer, an educator, an inventor, and a writer. She believed that all photographers should have personal projects that they are passionate about, no matter what the subject matter. This award was created by Julia Dean to honor her teacher and friend.
What constitutes an Emerging Photographer? An emerging photographer does not mean a young photographer, though a young photographer can certainly enter. Rather, it means that you have an accomplished body of work that has not yet been exhibited or published widely.
Criteria & Scope: Whether a fine art photographer or documentary photographer, the work submitted for this contest should reflect a cohesive body of work.

Call for Entries:
Each member may submit up to 5 (UPDATED!) pieces for adjudication and must be a current member on the deadline date of July 15, 2010. All accepted pieces must be framed and shipped to and from the gallery at the artist’s expense. All accepted artists will be contacted via e-mail on August 20, 2010. The show will run throughout the conference. The theme for the show is open to whatever vein of work you wish to submit. Please follow the submission guidelines and format carefully.
About the Juror:
Carol McCusker (see the image above) is an independent curator, writer and educator. For eight years, she was the Curator of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego. She received her B.F.A. in studio art and art history at Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, graduating with distinction. She then received her M.A. and Ph.D. in art history with an emphasis on the history of photography and film at the University of New Mexico (UNM), Albuquerque. While there, McCusker received the Beaumont Newhall Award, the Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship Award, the Friends of Photography Prize, and a National Endowment for the Arts Internship Award.
McCusker is currently Adjunct Professor at the University of San Diego. She is also a member of the Advisory Committee for UCSD’s Arts, Humanities & Languages Extension; and is working on two publications, Shooting Stars: War Photographers in Hollywood, that examines the aesthetic and socio-political relationship between 1940s photojournalism and Realist/Neorealist cinema. And Boom! 1963-1983: Two Decades of Change in American Photography. At MoPA, McCusker has curated more than thirty-five exhibitions.
