May 13-16: The 3. International Photobook Festival documenta-Halle Kassel, Germany

From the 3. International Photobook Festival website:

“From 13 to 16 May 2010, the 3. International Photobook Festival Kassel is once again addressing the recent development of the fascinating medium photobook. Just like in previous years, internationally renowned practitioners have been invited to present their work with photobooks and to engage in conversation with the festival participants.

Lectures by Paul Graham, Rob Hornstra, Rinko Kawauchi, Sybren Kuiper, Joachim Schmid, Lieko Shiga, Alec Soth and Niels Stomps. Special lectures by Ferdinand Brueggemann »Contemporary Japanese Women Photographers«, Dr. Bettina Lockemann »European photographers’ view of Japan«, Mikhail Karasik »Stalinist Photographic Books« and Hans-Michael Koetzle »Paris in Photobooks«.

Dummy Prize

One of the highlights of the festival will surely be the first Photobook Dummy Prize. Just like last year, we are asking photographers to submit their so far unpublished photobooks. The 50 best books will be exhibited during the festival. From these 50 titles, a jury, made up of lecturers and experts from the festival, will choose the winners of the Photobook Dummy Prize. The 1st Prize will include complete production and worldwide distribution of the book to the major photo-world addresses as well as a presentation in EUROPEAN PHOTOGRAPHY. Entries close on 12 April 2010.

Exhibitions by Rinko Kawauchi and Lieko Shiga, two outstanding representatives of contemporary Japanese photography. Rinko Kawauchi is showing 10 large format works from her book Utatane. Lieko Shiga is showing, for the first time in Europe, all 56 images from her series »Canary«; her book of the same name won the important Japanese »Kimura Ihei Commemorative Photography Award«. Both books will be presented alongside the exhibition. In a special exhibition the Kominek Gallery is showing works from Greg Girard.

As part of the successfully established portfolio and photobook reviews, we will once again foster fruitful conversations between photographers and accomplished appraisers (important publishers, gallery directors, curators). The reviewers will spend 20 min each with you, your questions and your images. A booking now includes 3 review dates. This time, the three best works will be selected by our experts. It is your chance to win one of the precious prizes on offer.

Workshops with well known specialists and publishers as well as technical presentations and short lectures will show you the best options to produce your photobook. But even collectors of photobooks and people who would like to start collecting will receive important insider tips. Also planned are workshops about printing, colour-management, design, printing paper selection and more.
