Tomorrow, November 12th- Panel Discussion “Streets of Philadelphia”

Tomorrow, Thursday, November 12, at 6:00pm at the Print Center in Philadelphia curator John Caperton will lead a discussion with exhibiting artists about the current show “Streets of Philadelphia: Photography 1970-1985″

Please join us for a special discussion on the Streets of Philadelphia: Photography 1970-1985 led by The Print Center’s Curator, John Caperton. The discussion will focus on the legacy early street photography and the works in the exhibition, the era they represent and their relationship to photography being created today. Guests will include exhibiting artists Paul Cava, David Graham, Tom Gralish, Paul McGuirk and Stephen Perloff, who will be joined by photographers Jeffrey Stockbridge, Sarah Stolfa as well as other special guests.
FREE and open to the public.

December 21st- Deadline for the PDN Photo Annual and Arnold Newman Prize

December 21st is the Deadline for the Photo District News Photo Annual

There has been a new prize added this year, the The Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation and Maine Media Workshops Scholarship and Prize for New Directions in Creative Photographic Portraiture. Photographers are invited to enter portrait photography for consideration in this new category.
The winner will receive $15,000 and a solo exhibit at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine.

About the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation:

The Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation was established in 2007 and funded by a generous gift from Augusta Newman.  The Foundation’s mission is to further the legacy of Arnold Newman by supporting photographers and photography students and helping to disseminate Newman’s photographic works.  The Foundation supports the annual Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture, scholarships at the Maine Media Workshops, lectures on photography and exhibits of Newman’s work.

The PDN Photo Annual  awards celebration for the winners will take place in May 2010 in New York, NY. The winners and their work will be featured in the May issue of PDN and on the Web site.

Also for students- Marty Forscher Fellowship

The Marty Forscher Fellowship recognizes students and young professionals with a talent for humanistic photography. The fund will award two grants in 2009. Photographers are eligible by entering humanistic documentary images to the PDN Photo Annual. The Fellowship is sponsored by Parsons School for Design and Photo District News.

November 17th- Zoe Strauss at the Center for Creative Photograph

Photographer Zoe Strauss will be at the Center for Creative Photography giving an Artist’s Talk on Tuesday, November 17th, 5:30pm

From the announcement:

Contemporary artist Zoe Strauss is a native of South Philadelphia and Director of the Philadelphia Public Art Project. She creates unflinchingly tough head-on color photographs that draw you up close to the urban American we are most comfortable viewing from a safe distance. Her work addresses themes such as gender and identity; addiction and desire; what it means to be American; and hope, pride, and joy. Strauss received a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2005 and exhibited in the 2007 Whitney Biennial.
