October 2: NY Center for Independent Publishing Conference on New Technologies

New York Center for Independent Publishing Conference on New Technologies

From the announcement:

New technology is transforming the publishing industry – from the way manuscripts are edited, to the way new books are reviewed, to the way they are sold to the reader. NYCIP wants to focus on the needs of independent publishers and emerging authors during this tumultuous time. We believe that the independents are the future of publishing, and only by remaining fluent in these technologies will indie presses meet their potential to bring alternative voices to the public. NYCIP is proud to present The Next Chapter in Publishing, a conference that will provide independent publishers and authors with the tools they’ll need to stay relevant.

The Next Chapter in Publishing will be held on October 2nd, 2009, at the General Society for Mechanics and Tradesmen‘s historic building at 20 West 44th Street.

Programming will include:

Introduction to eBooks, hosted by Mark Coker of Smashwords
Ebooks are the fastest growing category in book publishing. Exciting new e-reading devices such as the Sony Reader, Amazon Kindle and iPhone have introduced millions of voracious readers to the joys of ebooks.  How can authors and publishers reach this audience and benefit from the growth of ebooks? Following the session, you’ll be ready to publish and promote your book as an ebook to a worldwide audience.

One of the most common pieces of advice for a new publisher or young author is “Start a blog!” But once you’ve started it, what’s next?  In this Blogging Basics panel, Follow the Reader’s Charlotte Abbott and others will give you tips on how to build an online community.

The Changing Role of Book Reviews:
The talk, featuring panelists including Ed Champion and Sarah Weinman, will cover the shift in book reviews from newspapers and print to the online “long tail” of book sites, blogs, genre-specific sites, Twitter, and more. We’ll also discuss the concept of digital press kits to accompany digital galleys, the opportunity to see who’s reading your galleys to target follow-up, and touch on using pre-pub feedback to influence print runs, marketing plans and on-pub publicity.

Copyright in a Digital World with Dru Zuretti, Manager of Copyright Education for Copyright Clearance Center, will take you through the basics of U.S. copyright law, focusing on the challenges that the digital free-for-all has spawned.

It’s that time of year again for the best little underground photo conference out there – GeekFest. St. Petersburg, Fla. is the place to be September 11-13. $100 is a low price to pay for inspiration and motivation and fun.

Our list of speakers is still taking shape, but it’s already pretty outstanding:

* National Geographic photo legend Sam Abell

* 2009 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Feature Photography and New York Times stud Damon Winter

* 2009 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Breaking News Photography and Miami Herald super star Patrick Farrell

* former Dallas Morning News photographer turned bad ass freelancer Allison V. Smith

* San Antonio Express-News community photojournalist turned war photographer Nicole Frugé

* photo guru Bryan Moss

* San Jose Mercury News multimedia superstar Dai Sugano

* Alexis Lambert, lawyer, specializing in media law

Other things we’re cooking up include: a shuffleboard tournament, a shoot-out, a silent print auction and more… If you’ve never been to GeekFest before, it’s not your normal photo conference. It’s laid back. It’s low key. And it’s a pretty full weekend of photo goodness. We like to keep it casual and comfortable. Everyone that comes is there for inspiration, plain and simple.
