Photo-Eye has posted their annual “Best Of” compilation as determined by noted individuals in our field. Check it out here. And clear space on your shelves… I’m flying home from PhotoLA today with many new volumes to add to my library, mostly books on history or books on books… things at Marcus Schaden’s booth like Ken Sches’ A New History of Photography: The World Outside and the Pictures In Our Heads, and the reprints of historic volumes like those published by Errata Editions “Books on Books #1-4” (such a pleasure to meet Marcus, Ken and Jeffrey Ladd) an obsession of mine to be sure. David Maisel’s Library of Dust (what a pleasure to hear David talking about bringing the body of work to the publication in his conversation with Charlotte Cotton at PhotoLA). I captured many conversations about books with artists Arthur Tress, Arthur Ollman, Maya Ishiwata from Nazraeli Press and more with my trusty Flip Video… The Photobook is alive and well…and in my suitcase this morning…

NEWS: DEADLINE EXTENDED to JANUARY 25, 200
Perhaps one of the most intriguing rosters of reviewers so far this year are those participating in the review component of PHOTOESPANA, which runs from June 3 – July 26, with the reviews “DESCUBRIMIENTOS PHE MADRID” being held JUNE 11-13. Acceptance is juried and 70 photographers will be accepted, with notice of inclusion give February 4th. Work by all accepted photographers will be exhibited at PhotoEspana as well as on the event website. Reviewers include Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography at the NY Times Magazine, Susan Kismaric, Curator at MoMA and Rod Slemmons, Director of MoCP at Columbia College, among other industry professionals from Europe. I encourage all of you to submit and use your frequent flier miles for this interesting event!
The event website is confusing but follow though ENGLISH to THE FESTIVAL and you will find application forms (I can’t show links here as the URL line does not change). I hear the on-line submissions process is challenging…
Good luck to all who apply! And remember the deadline for Review Santa Fe is SOON: 1/23… www.visitcenter.org
