STORYTELLING: Segment on PBS’ Newshour 4/18/07

Last night there was a compelling segment on PBS’ The Newshour With Jim Lehrer yesterday, titled “Technology Helped Virginia Tech Students Connect After Tragedy,” on the subject of media coverage of the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech. Jeffrey Brown noted the impact of content available on sites such as YouTube and MySpace as well as subject-specific websites in not just reporting but in memorializing friends and family via these globally accessible venues.

Included in the discussion were Jamal Albarghoutie, Virginia Tech student and iReport videographer, Martin Clancy of ABC News Digital, and Andrew Nachison, Co-Founder, iFOCOS, all of whom made valuable observations to this important discussion. Brown closed the piece by stating “The only thing not in question is that, as the tragedy at Virginia Tech shows, new forms of storytelling are developing before our eyes.”

I urge to you see this piece – in print, stream the audio or click here and then click on “Streaming Video.”

The ASMP Bulletin is looking for entries from its members for the 2007 Best of ASMP issue. Any memorable project completed within the past year — from client assignments to personal work — is eligible for consideration.

In preparing your submission, please follow these guidelines:

Write a brief (250 words or less) description of the project. Be sure to say what made it memorable for you.

Prepare one low-res JPEG (500KB or less). Make sure to insert your name and caption info into the IPTC settings. (In Photoshop, use the File Info fields, and do not use the “Save For Web” output command.)

Email both items to submit@asmp.org before May 15, 2007.

Please note that, due to the volume of submissions expected, only the finalists will be contacted during the month of June for more details about their projects. Finalists are chosen by the Bulletin’s editors.

Rhubarb Festival Bookings Now OPEN! Event dates July 27-29, Birmingham, UK

Today the Rhubarb-Rhubarb portfolio review bookings officially opened. Click on “01. Rhubarb Festival” to link to the notice “REVIEWER PROFILES – BOOK NOW!”

This is the only such event where you book your own schedule – so HURRY if you are planning to attend! This is one of my favorite reviews of the year, but the most popular Reviewers will fill in just a few days. Get right on this!

The most economical way to travel to Birmingham, England from the USA is on Continental Airlines direct from Newark; know that when traveling into London there are no flight connections to Birmingham and doing such would require your going into London and getting on a train back out to Birmingham.

Good luck securing your desired schedule of Reviewers!
