Tyler Hicks of the New York Times was recently named 2006 Newspaper Photographer of the Year, and Christopher Anderson of Magnum was honored as Magazine Photographer of the Year. (Last week Anderson was awarded one of the Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography as well.)
Of great interest to me was the fact that multimedia entries tripled over last year and filled two days of judging, beginning in the early morning and continuing past midnight. The premiere awards for Best Use of Multimedia in both major and small markets went to The Washington Post and MediaStorm respectively. In the category “Best Multimedia Feature Story or Essay” was “The Sandwich Generation,” produced by Brian Storm of Media Storm, Writer/Director Julie Winokur and Photographer Ed Kashi.
Pictures of the Year International Competition is a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Jounalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism. Be sure to view all the winners on their website!
