Reminder: MVS to Lecture in Houston This Thursday During Events Honoring John Cleary

I’m in Houston this week and will be giving a lecture on Thursday evening at the Houston Center for Photography to honor the memory of my late friend John Cleary. HCP is currently exhibiting of selection of images from his collection, and will host an official naming ceremony for the John Cleary Library this coming Saturday.

TPS 17: Texas Photographic Society’s National Competition; DEADLINE 7/2/08

JULY 2 DEADLINE for TPS 15: The National Competition

Lisa Sutcliff, Assistant Curator, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, to Jury

Amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit slides or digital files of their color and black and white works to the Texas Photographic Society (TPS) by July 2, for TPS 17: The National Competition.

The Exhibition will open at the Dougherty Art Center in Austin, TX in September and then tour the state of Texas for one year.

An artist’s reception will be held September 20, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with an Awards Presentation at 7:00pm.

Nueva Luz Artists Myra Greene and Sama Alshaibi in NYC Soon

Join us for two fabulous opportunities to meet Nueva Luz artists


 

Both artists have been published by En Foco, in Nueva Luz photographic journal.

Palestinian Iraqi photographer Sama Alshaibi uses her body as a symbol to understand the impact of war and exile, and the implications for her child and future generations.

African American artist Myra Greene poses the question, “what do people see when they look at me. Am I nothing but black?” Using a photographic process popular during the times of slavery, she creates close-ups of her features to explore perceptions.

C4FAP’s CameraArts ShowCase Edition: Deadline September 4th

The Center for Fine Art Photography has posted guidelines for the CameraArts ShowCase Edition.

From the website:
The Center for Fine Art Photography and CameraArts Magazine are partnering to bring photographers a unique opportunity to promote their work and talent. Those working in all styles and schools of thought are invited to submit their work for consideration in this cooperative call for entry. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal, emotional, or political statements are welcome.

Theme: Open…..All subjects eligible.

Eligibility: The exhibition is open to all professional and amateur, domestic and international photographers working with digital or traditional photography or combinations of both.

Jurors: Tim Anderson, Publisher/Managing Editor, CameraArts Magazine and Larry Padgett, Executive Director, The Center for Fine Art Photography.

Deadline May 15: “A Shoot To Remember” for ASMP Bulletin

The ASMP Bulletin is looking for entries from its members for the 2007 Best of ASMP issue. Any memorable project completed within the past year — from client assignments to personal work — is eligible for consideration.

In preparing your submission, please follow these guidelines:

Write a brief (250 words or less) description of the project. Be sure to say what made it memorable for you.

Prepare one low-res JPEG (500KB or less). Make sure to insert your name and caption info into the IPTC settings. (In Photoshop, use the File Info fields, and do not use the “Save For Web” output command.)

Email both items to submit@asmp.org before May 15, 2007.

Please note that, due to the volume of submissions expected, only the finalists will be contacted during the month of June for more details about their projects. Finalists are chosen by the Bulletin’s editors.

Center for Book Arts: 2007 Artist Members’ Exhibition Submission Deadline April 15

Call for Entries: 2007 Artist Members’ Exhibition
The Center for Book Arts is pleased to invite Artist Members to submit artworks created between 2004 and 2007 to be considered for the 2007 Artist Members Exhibition titled: (Un)Contained Vessels. Pamela Spitzmueller, Book Artist and James W. Needham Chief Conservator for Special Collections, The Harvard University Library and the College Library, and Alexander Campos, CBAÕs Executive Director. The theme of the 2007 members exhibition examines the container not as merely a functional holding place, but as an integrated/activated part of the piece that is equally important and even enhances the art object it houses. “The Center for Book Arts provides artists with special services and opportunities in addition to the benefits of their membership category. Artist Members are included in the Artist Slide Registry, a resource devoted to artists working in the book format, which is used by curators, researchers, collectors, writers and other artists as a reference tool. GRIFFIN MUSEUM PORTFOLIO REVIEWS: Reservations to open Friday March 23rd

The Griffin Museum in Winchester, Massachusetts (near Boston) has announced the details for attending its Portfolio Review to be held on May 11th, from 10:00 - 1:00.

Reservations will be taken beginning 10:00 EST on Friday, March 23rd.

Fee three reviews: members is $100, non-members $125.

I’ll be giving a 1/2 day marketing workshop at the Griffin on Saturday April 28th from 1-5; I encourage all of you considering attending (or booked to attend) reviews at PhotoLucida, Griffin, PRC, Review Santa Fe or other spring 2007 events to come to this session and learn more about the value of these and other industry offerings, as well as how to most effectively and efficiently reach your audience.

UPDATE on Registering for CPW Portfolio Reviews in NYC

I’ve received updated information from Ariel Shanberg, executive director of the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) on their 2007 NYC Portfolio Reviews.

REGISTRATION for the reviews and all 2007 workshop offerings will begin on April 23 for CPW Members, April 25th for non-members.

Dates for the NYC Reviews, limited to 12 photographers each, are:
MONDAY June 4 and FRIDAY September 28th.

New Works #10: Exhibition Opens April 4th, Bronx, NY

New Works” is a major exhibition celebrating the tenth anniversary of En Foco’s New Works Photography Awards.

The exhibition features 2006-07 awardees Divya Murthy, Meg Escudé, Stephen Marc, Sonya Lawyer, William Wilson, LaToya Frazier, Emilio Banuelos, and also features work of awardees from the past ten years: Annu Matthew, Larry McNeil, Ana de Orbegoso, Terry Boddie and others.
