Kate’s introduction will be made by critic, poet, lecturer, and editor A.D. COLEMAN. Published by the University of Texas Press,Painted Light is available October 2010. Books will be for sale at the event for $65.00 plus tax.

November 5/6/7: NY Art Book Fair at PS1

One of my favorite fairs of the year, without question!  From the website:

Printed Matter presents the fifth annual NY Art Book Fair, November 5–7 at MoMA PS1, Long Island City, Queens.

Free and open to the public, the Fair hosts over 200 international presses, booksellers, antiquarian dealers, artists and publishers from twenty countries, offering the best in contemporary art book publishing.

Philip Aarons, Chairman of the Board of Printed Matter, said: “The NY Art Book Fair is the premiere venue to find what’s new in art publishing. While it has spawned the next generation of independent art book fairs world-wide, it remains the biggest, the best, and by far the most fun.”

The NY Art Book Fair includes special project rooms, screenings, book signings, and performances, throughout the weekend.

Jodi Miller has had her work placed in the Tate Gallery in London (2007), and has won a second place award in the International Photography Awards in 2009.

Cherie’s bio from Photographic Image.com:

Cherie Hiser began her study of photography after completing graduate studies in psychology in Hawaii in 1963. Her first workshops at the Portland Art Museum were with master teachers Minor White, Ruth Bernhard and Imogen Cunningham. She became impassioned with the medium and has become an internationally known artist, teacher, and “Photographic Evangelist”.

After moving to Aspen, Colorado in the mid 60’s to teach skiing, she worked as a newspaper photographer and married colleague David Hiser, who was soon to become a National Geographic photographer. In 1969 she founded The Center of the Eye in Apsen, one of the first and finest photography facilities in the country, which gained an international reputation as an alternative educational community in the arts. Through the barrage of prominent photographers who came to teach and participating students of those workshops, many of today’s finest artists and photographers are alumni of the Center of the Eye. In 1973, Cherie and her friend and neighbor, Paul Soldner, “the Minor White of clay”, developed a joint program of photography and ceramics through an invitation from the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, Colorado. Both Paul and Cherie have continued their association with the Anderson Ranch, including attending and celebrating it’s 25th anniversary of continuing inspiration.

Hiser served on Ansel Adams Friends of Photography Board of Trustees in Carmel, California for five years. Ansel recommended she become the first Director of Photography for the new Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities in Idaho in 1974. She was responsible for designing the photography building and programs, fundraising, establishing a photography gallery, fulfilling the role of curator of the private collection and teaching.

From Sun Valley, Cherie went to Santa Fe, New Mexico to establish the Center of the Eye Collaborative and Gallery on Canyon Road. The center stayed active for some years after Ms. Hiser had returned to her hometown of Portland, Oregon in 1978. She is a third generation “Portlander” and began teaching photography at the college level as well as embarking on a career as a professional Mental health Therapist, working predominately in hospital psychiatric units before retiring as a Psychiatric Assessment Specialist in 2001.

In 1996, responding to a yearning to leave the “corporate setting” and embrace community again, Hiser founded PhotoWorks NorthWest, Inc. (PWNW). The PWNW was a non-profit community for photographers in Portland, a “god-child of the Center of the Eye’. The 2400 sq ft facility included darkrooms, studio, and gallery, resource center, meeting space and workshops for members and their guests.

In the fall of 2000, Photo Americas, Inc. a non-profit organization with an international orientation, and new to the Pacific Northwest, occupied the PWNW facilities. Cherie Hiser has been a Trustee of Photo Americas (now called Photo Lucida) since its inception and establishment in Portland in 1999, and has served as Chairperson of the Fine Art Auction in both 2000 and 2001, and is a frequent reviewer.

During 1997-1998, Hiser was one of the twenty semi-finalists in the United States for the 1998 Humanitarian Photographer of the Year Award. She is in demand as a curator, juror, consultant, teacher, innovator and visionary. She has exhibited and published her work and taught at universities, workshops, hotel lobbies and campsites throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe for more than three decades.

In January of 2000, Cherie was diagnosed with a neurological disorder, which seemingly changed all life plans and goals. The healing process is on –going and challenging. During long months at home she began photographing her beloved pet doves and pigeons, constant companions for forty years. This transformational experience offered her a new perspective and the opportunity and enthusiastic commitment to concentrate on her life’s work in photography. This last series is named “Birds of Pray” #1, 2000-2006.

Cherie Hiser has been described as “one of the most vital persons of our time” by Cornell Capa, Director of the international Center of Photography in New York. Now in her sixth decade, she truly is an “emerging photographer’. “

“The print-on-demand revolution has opened up new publishing possibilities for photographers; it has never been easier or more affordable to produce and market a book of your photographs. The traditional publishing path has the advantage of a highly specialized team that brings experience with design, production, marketing and distribution systems to the table. In a self-publishing scenario you can create exactly the book you envision, but without the input and expertise of seasoned professionals at a publishing house. Which scenario is best for you?In this presentation, coauthors Darius Himes and Mary Virginia Swanson will discuss both avenues to publishing and help participants determine the pros/cons of each. Swanson will share resources from their forthcoming title, Publish Your Photography Book (Princeton Architectural Press, Winter 2011), and time will be allocated for a question/answer period at the end of the presentation.”

Fine art photography blogs have changed the landscape for sharing and reviewing work. Blogs are more personal and idiosyncratic while attracting a wide audience, and doing so more quickly and inexpensively.  Photographers no longer have to wait for a review of a bricks-and-mortar exhibition by a very small group of print publications. The objective of this night is to inform photographers about fine art photography blogging:
-how the blog came into being
-how the blog differs from photography covered in a print edition (if there is one)
-what bloggers like (or don’t) about blogging
-advantages and disadvantages about blogging
-who is the audience for the blog
-how work is chosen for the blog
-how bloggers like (or don’t) to be contacted by photographers, agents or galleries
-how blogging has impacted fine art photography (or not)

November 4th in San Diego: An evening with curator Carol McCusker

Join CAROL McCUSKER for a special talk on contemporary photography:

Carol McCusker’s talk, Know Thyself, will focus on fine art photography, specifically questions around how we develop a vision, what influences come to bear on our creative output, and the roll of galleries, museums, photo competitions and portfolio reviews. Using music as a corollary, she’ll explore how photography falls into as many different categories (folk, rock, jazz, country, world beat, classical, etc.), but how, within each category, there are equivalents of ‘Musak’ at one end of the spectrum and inspired innovation at the other. What she seeks from all creative people, including herself, is the ability to ‘know thyself,’ and to honestly know where you fit in this spectrum.

McCusker is also concerned with the use of language when photographers talk about their work, which can often confuse not just their audience but themselves and what they hope to achieve. To make her point, she’ll use examples from the current Art in Photography Show, its attending lecture series, the history of photography and a competition she recently juried.

Carol McCusker is an independent curator, writer and educator. For eight years, she was Curator of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, where she curated over thirty-five exhibitions. She is an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego and UCSD Extension. Recently, she was Juror for the prestigious 2010 ICP/NY Infinity Award, and the 2010 Julia Margaret Cameron Award in York, UK. McCusker has review portfolios nationally and internationally, including the Lishui Photo Festival, Lishui, China; Camera Lucida, Portland, OR; Houston Photo Fest, TX; Review Santa Fe, NM; Atlanta Celebrates Photography, GA; and Review L.A. She writes for The Photo Review, B&W, Color, Communication Arts, and numerous artists’ catalogues.
