FREE LECTURE AT SMoCA: “Lineage: tracing generations of American photography”

*This  presentation is part of SMoCA’s Free Thursday Evening Summer Events*

(Scottsdale, AZ) Claire C. Carter, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s co-curator of the current exhibition At the Crossroads of American Photography: Callahan, Siskind, Sommer, will provide scholarly context for the three featured photographers in a free lecture in Stage 2 Theater on Thursday, July 16th at 6:30 p.m.

Carter will examine the aesthetic interrelationship of these three mid-century photographers who helped define the course of American photography and the impact that they have had on contemporary artists. She will explore how the self-taught photographers, often referred to as the ‘holy trinity of American photography’ helped shape a national community of peers and the evolution of photography as an art form, creating the bridge between straight photography and the hybrid approaches to the medium seen presently. “Almost every photographer working today was either taught by one of them [Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind or Frederick Sommer] or by one of their students,” stated Claire Carter.”

This exhibition is on view through August 9th – not to be missed!
