I’m off to Los Angeles this week to meet with photographers, review portfolios at Review LA and attend its open portfolio viewing evening, and attend one of my favorite art fairs, Photo LA. I hope to meet many of you there!
This Thursday night January 8th is Opening Night for PhotoLA, being held at Barker Hanger at the Santa Monica Airport. The programming includes “morning walk throughs”with curators (Fri/Sat/Sun), as well as a series of free lectures on publishing being held Saturday afternoon organized and moderated by Charlotte Cotton, curator of photography at LACMA. One of my favorite things about PhotoLA is that publishers as well as galleries have booths, so it is a great time to gain a clear sense of the “brands” when one sees all their titles together. In terms of visiting the booths of galleries, I enjoy gaining a barometer on the market: pricing, editing sizes, presentation styles and more. Remember: the dealers and publishers present have not invested in participating at PhotoLA to search for new talent – this is NOT the place to approach any vendors with your work; rather, this is a great way to do your homework on the market, and narrow down your search for dealers that would be a good match for you and your work. THEN, watch for this targeted group to jury exhibitions and participate at Portfolio Review events as opportunities to introduce your work to them. Also watch for them to be giving public lectures, writing articles and to be profiled in industry trade publications and blogs as a way to better know their interests and tastes. Attending art fairs is a wise investment in your career as an artist. Go to www.artfairsinc.com/photola/09/ for complete event information.
