“In A New Direction” Exhibition Opening Reception January 3rd at Wall Space, Seattle

Competition Juror CLINT WILLOUR, Curator of the Galveston Art Center has made his selections, and the exhibition “In A New Direction” will open to the public today, with a reception tomorrow from 6 – 8 p.m. at Wall Space Gallery in Seattle.

PHOTO LOS ANGELES, January 10-13, Santa Monica

One of my favorite gallery expos of the year begins soon. The 17th Annual PHOTO LA will begin Thursday evening, January 10th, with the proceeds from the opening night festivities to benefit the photography collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

ALSO OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: On Friday evening, January 11th from 5 – 8 p.m. a reception and print viewing of the work of the 75 photographers participating in REVIEW LA will be held at the Santa Monica Art Studios, 3026 Airport Avenue, Santa Monica (near Photo LA). Seeing the accomplished work of emerging artist will be an added “plus” to spending the weekend at Photo LA. (Spaces for photographers are filled; join the e-list for advance information on such opportunities at www.visitcenter.org)

a portfolio review organized by CENTER held in conjunction with Photo Los Angeles.

Take note that the location of the fair has moved from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium to BARKER HANGER at the Santa Monica Airport.

Friend and colleague Darius Himes has posted his much-awaited year end list of favorite photobooks on his blog. He begins with:

“All around the country, editors and writers have agonized over their list of favorite books from the previous year, publishing them** as guides to gift-giving for the art-lover on your holiday list. But the official shopping season is now over. Money has been spent, gifts given, bellies distended from all of Mom’s cooking.

For the truly obsessed book hound, however, the time to linger over, to covet and dream about the next photobook purchase never really ends; indeed, visions of sugar-plum-colored books is only a click away.

What follows is my own personal list of favorite photobooks of 2007. Some will be familiar because they were featured during my tenure at photo-eye; others will be less familiar simply because they are brand-spanking new. I’ve decided to keep the reviews short and sweet–generally 2-3 sentences–with links to the website of either the publisher or gallery that published the book. Enjoy!”
