MAGNUM FESTIVAL: June 2007, New York City

Magnum Photos is celebrating 60 years as an independent agency and artistic cooperative. Timed to correspond with this seminal anniversary, the Magnum Festival will embrace various aspects of the past 60 years of documentary as well as promote the importance for responsible documentary work in the future. SPECIAL EVENTS:

1) Walter Reade Theater
Magnum and the Future of Photojournalism
Several active members of the Magnum agency will join Mark Whitaker, former editor of Newsweek, onstage at the Walter Reade for a free panel discussion about the future of photojournalism.

2) New York Public Library
Magnum @ 60
With the advent of the “digital revolution” and “citizen journalism,” more people are taking pictures and telling/sharing stories than ever before. Now, the power of photography has been thrown into a new light and traditional photojournalism must answer new questions. How does this democracy change the role of the journalist? Will traditional photojournalism have a place in the future? Magnum Photos and Live from the NYPL consider the future of Magnum and the face of photography within this rapidly developing landscape.
